Starting a Clinic in your Community
The Larger Picture: The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as “subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy, autonomy, competence, intergenerational reliance, and self-actualization of one’s intellectual and emotional capacity, among other things.” This definition suggests that a lot of people suffer from mental health issues. However, there is an acute shortage of professionals in India. Some studies suggest a 90% gap in treatment. Further, the cost of care, along with the stigma associated with mental illness, is a double blow for already impoverished families.
Bridging the Gap: Therefore, mental health research and activism advises that bridging the gap in delivering mental health treatment, particularly in low-income and developing nations, necessitates a larger role for society. MHAT believes in this philosophy.

Recovery Orientation: According to the WHO, an individual’s well-being includes the realisation of their talents, coping with regular life pressures, productive employment, and contribution to their community. Cultural variations, subjective evaluations, and conflicting professional ideas all influence how “mental health” is defined. Therefore MHAT aim is to enable suffering individuals to regain their lost abilities and launch them on a recovery journey of hope and meaning.
